Hi Everyone!
I'll start by telling you a little about myself, first of all I'm a thirty-one year old wife, and mother of two daughters. We live in central Iowa, on a farm. My husband is an electrician, and I have been a medical secretary for the last ten years. I decided to go back to school so I could earn more money, however being in school, and not working, has been really hard on us financially, but we're hanging in there.
I started at Kaplan University Online in August, 2009, for Medical Transcription. Going to school online has been a good fit for me, because commuting to school would have been very expensive, and time consuming. The challenges of attending school online are constant interruptions, from my home home life, and keeping up the motivation to succeed. I also find it challenging to get a hold of some of my instructors... but I won't get into that ! :)
My research paper will be about ADD/ADHD and chemical exposure to phthalates in the womb. I'm VERY interested in this topic because I myself have ADD and my Mother, Grandmother, and both of my daughters do too! Obviously this has caused some real hurdles in our life. My youngest daughter actually has ADHD, and that is different because of the hyperactive element, and boy does that throw a ringer in our lives, I'm sorry if that sounds harsh, but it's true. I once had a friend come and stay at our house for the week, she said to me, "How on earth do you handle having to ride them constantly to get ready in the morning?" I quickly reminded her I to have ADD, so I often forget to ride them, and we are late for almost EVERYTHING!!! We actually have to challenge ourselves everyday to get ready and be somewhere on time. Sorry, bunny trail... that's what I call it when I get off subject! ;) Anyway, obviously if I could find information about what might be causing ADD/ADHD this would be very useful for my children, as they will probably have children some day. I'm excited to get started!
Thanks for reading my blog!!!! ~Jaclynn~

Hi Jaclynn, I am often off on a bunny trail. Does that mean I am ADD? When I visit my oldest daughter and watch her deal with my six year old granddaughter who has her wrapped around her little finger and often takes an agonizing path to getting dressed and ready for school in the morning. I do not know how my daughter is so patient with her. She mostly does not raise her voice, but talks with her logically and makes deals with her. I watch in amazement because I would have been long down the bunny path and probably raising my voice and losing my cool.
ReplyDeletePlease tell me how you were diagnosed?
Hi! I was diagnosed in fifth grade. My parents, doctor, and teachers decided to have me tested, since my school work was "lacking." I went to a specialist who spoke with me, and made me do weird things like, walk straight lines, catch a ball, and other corresponding games. I have never had any luck with ADD medicine, ritalin made me a nervous wreck, so they tried antidepressents like prozac for example, and those seemed to help. As an adult I was on concerta... BIG mistake! because it only helps you for a certain time period. For example I would take it in the morning before work, at about 7:30, and by the end of the work day, like 5:30, which was also the time that I got home to my children, which by the way were on the same medicine (what a nut house ;)lol) see bunny trail...sorry... anyway when I would get home from work I would literally "freak out" I couldn't barely function. I described it to my doctor that we were like a small plastic ball, the kind that you can squeeze, and in the morning before the medicine was us unsqueezed, then the medicine squeezed us, keeping us "in line" or more like everyone else, and at the end of the day, WHAM! all the pressure would let loose. Does that make since? The doctor changed our medication to Strattera, which was a much better fit. Strattera takes awhile to build up in your system, which is why you MUST take it everyday, because if you don't you ruin the "build up" in your system. It's also a good idea to take it the same time everyday. But the best part of it is that it doesn't just stop working, and you get the rebound effect. Sorry I kind of elaborated about the medications. Both of my children are on Strattera still, however when I lost my job, I had to discontinue it...
